Vantan is the musical alias of Johanna Schlömicher, born in Salzburg and now living and working in Vienna. Her music blends poetic observations of everyday life with distorted synthesizers, bar-room piano, and raw, unconventional sounds. Moving between new wave, post-punk, and avant-garde songwriting, she creates songs that flicker somewhere between the stage and a burning trash can—gritty, lyrical, political, and tender.

Sonically situated somewhere between new wave, post-punk, and avant-garde songwriting, her project sounds as if Diamanda Galás were covering Kate Bush in an aging kitchen—with a rusty vocoder and a little too much Viennese dust in her lungs. The electric piano is her accomplice, her antagonist, her driving force. The sound: raw, rough, atmospheric. The lyrics: poetic, political, personal—hovering between observation and vision, fairy tale and reality check.

Her debut single on Superego Records, “Backlash,” will be released on November 14, 2025, on all streaming platforms. A release show will take place on November 21 at the Rote Bar in Vienna’s Volkstheater. Tickets
